More sneaky food inventions for kids

Forget gourmet cooking, mastery of toddler mealtimes often demands much more creativity. Sick of hearing “just plain please mum” (pasta, rice, yoghurt, everything), I regularly invent weird food combinations and a surprising number of them work.

Vegetables are rejected the most so this week I made sausage rolls using lean mince, onion, herbs, grated potato, carrot, zucchini, cabbage and bread dough. Using a basic pizza dough recipe I rolled it out thinly, wrapped the meat mixture up in fat sausage shapes (with ends turned up) and baked. They were a success with adults too and are a low fat option we’ll happily use again.

This morning there was strange assortment of things lurking in the fridge – five strawberries, one ripe banana, a spoonful of peanut butter – so I blended them together and added to pancakes with some wholemeal flour to prevent stickiness. If there are any left they make a good portable snack later in the day.

Not every invention is a winner but kids love to help with a blender and just about anything can be mixed in somewhere.
